The Directorate is responsible for the functions established in Chapter IV, Section 2, Article 13 of the AECID Statute approved by Royal Decree 1246/2024 of 10 December.
ANTÓN LEIS GARCÍA
Director of AECID
Antón Leis García (Santiago de Compostela, 1981). He holds a Law Degree with Special Honours from the Carlos III University of Madrid, a Master's Degree in Law (LL.MM) from Harvard Law School and a double Master's Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from the London School of Economics and the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po). He speaks English, French and Portuguese.
He has developed his professional career in the field of international organisations, specialising in international cooperation and multilateral affairs. Prior to his appointment as Director of the AECID, he held various positions at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), including at the Secretariat for Global Relations and the Office of the Secretary-General, where he served as Counsellor to the Secretary-General, with the rank of division head.
Between 2018 and 2020, he was Advisory Member in the General Secretariat for International Affairs, EU, G20 and Global Security of the Office of the President of the Spanish Government, responsible for coordinating Spain's participation in the G20 and other multilateral affairs. He was also Advisor to the Secretary of State for International Cooperation.
Previously, he held positions as a development worker at the African Development Bank as a senior specialist in governance and private sector development from Tunisia and Côte d'Ivoire, as well as at the World Bank as a legal adviser, working on the Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and Caribbean regions from the Washington headquarters.
